the following history
Mary was a Jewish peasant woman from
the insignificant town of Nazareth. She was married to Joseph, a
laborer, a carpenter. One of the most significant statements attributed
to her in the Bible is the Magnificat, a soaring song that says, in
part: “God has scattered the proud in the imagination of their
hearts,/has put down the mighty from their thrones,/has exalted those of
low degree,/has filled the hungry with good things,/and has sent the
rich away empty.” According to the Gospels, her relation with her son
was sometimes complex, but she was absolutely devoted to him and
followed him with extraordinary courage and love until the moment of his
death. She was, in short, a poor, steadfast, and intelligent woman who
supported her child through all of his tempestuous life. |
